An arborist tree surgeon also known as arboricultrist is a person who deals with cultivation, management and study of individual trees, shrubs, vines and other woody plants in horticulture. Arborist tree service mainly focuses on health and safety of individual plants and trees rather than managing forests or harvesting wood. An arborist work is quite different from a forester and also logger.

An arborist’s work may involve very large and complex trees, or ecological communities. These trees may require monitoring, and treatments to ensure that they are safe and suitable to property owners and community standards. Their work may include some of the following.
  • Planting
  • Transplanting
  • Stump removal in Melbourne
  • Pruning
  • Structural support
  • Preventing or diagnosing and treating phytopathology or parasitism
  • Preventing or interrupting grazing or predation
  • Installing lightning protection
  • Removing hazardous vegetation like a disease vector or weed
The other works done by this professional is plan, consult, write reports and give testimony. Some of this work is done in an office located on the ground; most of other work is done by them on trees, which the arborist climbs with ropes, harness and other equipment. In few cases lift and cranes are also used. Few arborists just provide a consulting service while others may performs tasks like climbing, pruning and planting. There are few experts who do a combination of these two services.

To work near power lines either additional training is required or the expert should be a Qualified Line Clearance Arborist or Utility Arborist. Arborists, who climb, use a variety of techniques to ascend on to the tree. The two most common techniques are single rope technique and double rope technique. In few cases, personal safety could be issue for cases like removing trees, then the professional uses spikes attached to their chainsaw boots with straps to ascend and work.
